The Master cylinder consisting of a piston and a reservoir of fluid will (with the use of hydraulics) move the fluid under pressure to your individual calipers causing them to press the brake pad against your rotors or drums located in the rim of your tire. When the master cylinder begins to fail this can be very dangerous quickly. The first sign of a failing master cylinder is when applying your brakes they feel “squishy” or the pedal seems to be moving way too much be for the vehicle begins to stop. This problem can sometimes be fixed with simply adding brake fluid. If a master cylinder is low on brake fluid it will not work properly. Other times it may need to be replaced. Either way we want your family safe. The best way we can do this is to offer a FREE visual brake inspection.
The calipers on a vehicle hold the brake pad and use the hydraulic pressure from the brake fluid in the lines to force the brake pad against your rotor or drum. When a caliper fails, it typically will not recoil the brake pad back off the rotor. This will cause the brake pad to ride up against the rotor for too long or sometimes continuously. A good indication of this would be a slight pull to the right or left when you drive. When replacing calipers you should always replace both calipers at the same to insure even braking on both sides of your automobile.
Your brake pads can be made up of several different types of material. These different types consist of metallic, organic, ceramic or porcelain. When your brakes are applied the calipers press a brake pad against your spinning drums or rotors. As they make contact they begin to heat up. When the material wears off of your brake pad there is less material to dissipate the heat. Your vehicle will seem to take longer to stop. Also you may hear a slight squeal as the brakes begin to wear thin. This is piece of metal that is designed to touch the spinning rotor or drum and make a noise to let you know that they should be inspected.
The brake shoe holds the brake lining. It is used to force the lining against the drum when the brakes are applied. The brake drum is a heavy flat top cylinder. When the brakes are applied the material from the material from the brake shoe is forced into contact with the brake drum to slow the rotation of the wheel.
Rotors can become warped. This is common and is likely to happen when your rotor begins to wear thin over time. This happens as a result of overheating. You will begin to feel pulsations when your brakes are applied. This is a good indication your rotors may need to be machined/cut or if they are too thin they will need to be replaced. When resurfacing a rotor on our brake lathe with a cutting tool it will restore your rotor ability to stop you properly. This is a result of making the rotors surface flat. If you begin to feel a pulsation you should have your brakes checked as soon as possible.

Tips: Avoid riding your brakes, it’s always better to apply your brakes and then release them to allow momentary cooling. Riding your brakes will cause them to overheat. In the long run this will be more costly to maintain.
On steep grades consider downshifting to save your brakes. Only do this when traction conditions are good. In ice, snow, or even rain, downshifting into too low of a gear may cause a skid. Downshifting lets your engine do some of the braking instead of your brakes.
Your braking system is one of the most important things to have working properly for you and your family’s safety. Your brake pads take a lot of punishment.
