Car Batteries and how they go bad.
The acid inside a car battery “sulfuric acid” reacts with lead in the cell plates, which is what causes the current that allows the battery to power your car. Over time, sulfate builds up on the plates and renders the battery unable to produce a current. According to Yahoo! Autos, the average auto battery life is about four to five years in ideal circumstances. Hot temperatures can cause some of the water in the battery to evaporate below the cell plates, leading them to to dry out and the battery to go bad more quickly. Knowing when your car battery is bad can be difficult. There are other problems that can cause the same symptoms to those caused by a bad battery. How car storage batteries work.
Car batteries are typically lead-acid batteries. Inside, are a number of cells, there are six cells in a twelve volt battery, and they’re separated by “separators”. Each cell has a potential of producing from 1.5 to 2.2 volts, and these cells consist of a series of plates. One set of plates are called “positive plates”, they are coated with lead peroxide paste, which sticks to a lead grid, and the other plates are the negative plates, and they’re just made out of sponge lead. These plates or cells are  in acid, which is called electrolyte, and when you have two dis-similar metals are submerged in acid, and you have a complete circuit, the battery will start to produce current. You might notice I said automotive storage battery. Basically the battery, is doing nothing but storing the essential elements necessary to produce electricity when a circuit is completed . On top of the battery, is a positive post and a negative post. The positive post is slightly larger, that’s labeled with a plus, that has to be connected to the cars electrical system using the positive battery cable. And the negative post is ground, labeled with a minus sign. that has to be connected to a metal part of the car, on the frame, or on the engine.
